What is Critical Thinking

1. First you want to determine the thesis of the article. Write this is the word doc.
2. Review the article again and underline key points in the margin of the essay. Use a dictionary to look up any words you do not know. Mark up any statements that you find confusing. Write a list of the main points in your word doc.
3. Provide a summary of the article’s main points/argument, either in bullet form or paragraph form. Assume your reader is intelligent with a background in the article’s topic but has not read the article recently.
4. Now you need to Critically analyze (that is analyze and evaluate) the article.
To analyze you should examine key ideas in the article and consider whether you find them convincing or not. Explain why you react in this way.
To evaluate you should determine how effective and valid the argument presented is and (if applicable) the methods used to support the argument and conclusions presented. Consider any evidence used by the author to support his/her arguments. What sources are used? Are they valid? Why? or Why not?
