Unit 9 Discussion

It  is essential to be aware of potential ethical problems that may arise  in practice. Without such awareness, a human service professional can  stumble inadvertently into a problematic situation from which it can be  difficult to extricate yourself. Your discussion will focus on  developing and enhancing your awareness in this area.

Create  a scenario where a human service professional, who works in a small  community, is experiencing an ethical dilemma and then please respond to  the following:

  • Describe your scenario and identify each of the problematic decisions made by the practitioner involved.
  • Use  one of the decision-making models (e.g., Multiperspectival Model  Decision-Making Model Process) in Letourneaus (2016) article to resolve  the dilemma.
  • Create a plan of action for how to manage the situation from this point on.
  • Research  similar disciplinary scenarios in your own state and discuss how they  were addressed by the regulatory board. If no such violations occurred  in your state, you may use one from a nearby state.

Discussion 2: Considerations In Designing A Qualitative Study

Using what you have learned about your topic from your literature search, you are working towards formulating a research purpose and question. Note that in the Learning Resources for this week, the language of qualitative research is incorporated into how the research purpose and question is formulated. Here are some basic dos and donts.

Quantitative (Donts)

Qualitative (Dos)

Predict

Examine differences, effects, or impact

Correlate

Analyze

Explore

Understand

Describe

Variables

Indicators

Measures

Experience

Meaning

Essence

Narrative

Hypotheses

Broad,   open-ended questions

For example, in the ongoing scenario for each of the weeks of this course, the qualitative research question is formulated based on:

DO: The purpose of this study is to understand the narratives of childcare and support in families in impoverished communities.

DO: What is the meaning of a well-behaved child to early childhood caregivers in impoverished neighborhoods?

While as in this example, the research question is formulated based on quantitative information

DONT: The purpose of this study is to examine the demographic and family factors that predict the use of childcare services in impoverished communities.

DONT: What are the differences in early childhood social skill acquisition between children that do receive childcare services and those that do not?

For this Discussion, you will examine qualitative research as it relates to qualitative design considerations.

To prepare for this Discussion:

Review the Learning Resources and the Fundamentals of Qualitative Research Methods: Developing a Qualitative Research Question video and consider the basic guidelines for qualitative research design.

Use the Course Guide and Assignment Help found in this weeks Learning Resources and search for a qualitative research article. (Note: This article should be the research article you are using for your Major Assignment 1.)

Review the qualitative research article you found and identify each of the components of the research design and consider what is present and what is missing.

Identify what the authors did to document positionality, reflexivity, and bias.

By Day 4

Transform your notes from your preparation work into three paragraphs and post the following:

A brief statement of the purpose and primary research question the article addresses

An assessment of how thoroughly the research design was presented, including what was missing

An assessment of the extent of the researchers presentation of positionality, reflexivity, and bias

Be sure to support your main post and response post with reference to the weeks Learning Resources and other scholarly evidence in APA style.

Discussion 1: Conceptualizing A Qualitative Research Question

Good research is driven by the synthesis of ones passion or interest with a topic that has been under-studied in the professional literature. Out of that synthesis emerges a gapan area in need of further study that is consistent with your intereststhat defines the research problem. Clarifying the research problem takes time, effort, and thought.

Once you have developed your research problem, the research purpose and research question become self-evident.

What also becomes evident is your position with respect to the topic, the question, and what you hope to find. Qualitative research recognizes that the research space is shaped by both the participants and the researcher.

the identities of both researcher and participants have the potential to impact the research process. Identities come into play via our perceptions, not only of others, but of the ways in which we expect others will perceive us. Our own biases shape the research process, serving as checkpoints along the way. Through recognition of our biases, we presume to gain insights into how we might approach a research setting, members of particular groups, and how we might seek to engage with participants (Bourke, 2014, p. 1).

For this Discussion, you will examine a research question based on the purpose for inquiry, a rationale for the study, and issues of positionality.

To prepare for this Discussion:

Consider the research topic you are developing for your Major Assignment 1.

Review Chapter 3 of the Ravitch and Carl text and use Table 3.1, page 69 to help you create a rationale using the questions as your guide.

Review Chapter 3 of the Ravitch and Carl text and specifically use pages 7076 to create a positionality memo to reflect on your relationship to the topic.

Review the Fundamentals of Qualitative Research Methods: Developing a Qualitative Research Question media program as a guideline to help you create a research question.

By Day 3

Transform your notes from your preparation work into four paragraphs and briefly explain in your post the following:

1. The research purpose of your inquiry

2. The rationale

3. Issues of positionality

4. The research question

Be sure to support your main post and response post with reference to the weeks Learning Resources and other scholarly evidence in APA style.

Week 7

Instructions

This assignment provides you with an opportunity to analyze a real-world,    peer-reviewed psychology journal article. You should find an article containing    research that examines motivation, emotion, and social psychology.

Begin by visiting the CSU Online Library to locate and choose a journal    article in which motivation and emotion are viewed under the lens of social    psychology. The article must be peer-reviewed and should be no older than 7    years.

Once you have chosen your article, you will write an article critique that    addresses the following elements.

  • Explain the research methodology that was used in the study.
  • Discuss social factors that influence people or groups to conform to the         actions of others.
  • Indicate how behaviors and motivation are impacted by the presence of         others.
  • Indicate the structures of the brain that are involved in emotion and         motivation.
  • Examine the articles generalizability to various areas of       psychology.

In addition, your article critique should clearly identify the articles    premise and present an insightful and thorough analysis with strong arguments    and evidence. You should present your own informed and substantiated opinion on    the articles content. You must use at least one source in addition to your    chosen article to support your analysis and opinion.

Your article critique must be a minimum of two pages in length, not including   the title and reference pages. All sources used must be properly cited. Your    article critique, including all references, must be formatted in APA style.

You may view the following CSU Writing Center tutorial for   assistance in writing an article   critique.

Discussion Question 2

International Negotiation as Global Leadership Skill

Analyzing international negotiation can provide important insights for being effective global leaders. Multi-cultural negotiating skills are increasingly necessary to effectively manage multinational network organizations. Multi-cultural skills are increasingly necessary for effectively leading domestic organizations as well.

For the first paragraph of your posting, discuss how international negotiation might help international leaders acquire the knowledge and skill necessary in todays global business environment.

For the second paragraph of your posting, select any one of the following bullet points and address all elements of your chosen bullet point. Select a different bullet point section than what your classmates have already posted so that we can engage several discussions on relevant topics. If all the bullet points have been addressed, then you may begin to re-use the bullet points with the expectation that varied responses continue.

  • How can effective international negotiators find common ground in negotiations? What perspectives do negotiators use to look for common ground? What techniques might be used?

Project: Cultural Differences

Project: Cultural Differences

This course has major project assignments that will be due in weeks 3 and 5. It will take more than a weeks effort to adequately complete them. Plan time to start the research and other work for those assignments earlier than the week in which they are due.

The course project is based on a case study: System Modification for Japan. Click to download the case study. You will be submitting a portion of the course project in weeks 1, 3, and 5 during the course. As noted above, the week 3 and 5 submissions are considered major projects.

This week, read the Background section of the case study. Also review the first two discussion questions at the end of the case study document. Do not skip ahead to future sections of the case study or other discussion questions in the document for this weeks work. Many important issues for the case study lie below the surface and require both background research and critical evaluation to uncover.

Based on the Background section, address the following topics:

  1. Differing business practices among cultures
    • What business practices appear to be different among the cultures/organizations in the case study?
    • What are the cues in the case study that demonstrate the different cultural perspectives about business practices?
      • In particular, be sure to look at cues around the RFP and around task versus relationship themes to help you dig deeply into the business practices issue.
  2. Best practices for easing tensions among cultures in international negotiators.
    • Based upon the cues within the context of the case study and the research you have completed, provide at least 3 best practices that international negotiators might use to ease the types of tensions developing in the case study. Provide research support for the best practices.

Important hint: You might find it helpful to begin each section of the paper by discussing the key themes and cues you observe. Then, do research on those key themes to both broaden and deepen your evaluation of the case and your understanding of the important issues. In the final product, about half your written evaluation of each topic should be research. About half should be application to the case study.

Recommendation for the level one headings for the body of your paper:

Differing Business Practices

Differing Communication Styles and Structure

Best Practices for Easing Cultural Tension

Submission Details:
