Interview a nurse leader (chief nurse, associate chief nurse, director, supervisor, manager), a masters prepared nurse with leadership responsibilities (nurse educator, nurse quality specialist, nurse risk manager, nurse case manager, etc.), or advanced practice nurse with leadership responsibilities (clinical nurse specialist, nurse anesthetist, nurse midwife, or nurse practitioner).

Analyze the leaders role as it relates to a minimum of five of the major course concepts addressed (ethics in leadership, emotional intelligence, communication, conflict resolution, change theory, cultural competence/diversity, labor relations management, leadership models, management theory, motivational theory, Nurse of the Future competencies, interprofessional collaboration, and team building).

Provide a narrative summary of your interviewees responses to each of the concepts (but not a verbatim account) of the interview. Incorporate references to provide support and analyze the concepts you discussed. Include your impression of congruence between the leaders self-reflection and your personal observations of demonstrated leadership. Include the following in your paper:

Comprehension: Introduce the leader, his or her credentials, title, job responsibilities, placement on the organizational chart/reporting responsibilities, education, experience, mentors, and pathway to their current role.

Application: Describe the predominate model/theory of leadership used by this leader. Describe their style of leadership.

Analysis/Synthesis: Clarify and illustrate the leaders level of authority and influence within the organization. Discuss their sense of empowerment and efforts to empower others. Describe their intra- and extra-organizational responsibilities.

Compare your personal philosophy/style/model of leadership with this leader and share whether or not expectations/perceptions of this leader were accurate.

Evaluation: Summarize the leaders behavior, strengths, successes, challenges and weaknesses.

Your paper should be 9 to 10 pages long, not counting cover page or references list, and should utilize 10-12 scholarly references.

CS/SB 614 authorizes  an ARNP to prescribe, dispense, administer, or order any drug, which would include controlled substances.

ARNP disciplinary sanctions are added to the bill in s. 456.072, F.S., (Section 5) to mirror a physicians sanctions for prescribing or dispensing a controlled substance other in the course of professional practice or failing to meet practice standards. Additional acts for which discipline may be taken against an ARNP relating to practicing with controlled substances that are added to the Nurse Practice Act (Section 10) include:

Presigning blank prescription forms.

Prescribing a Schedule II for office use.

Prescribing, dispensing, or administering an amphetamine or sympathomimetic amine drug, except for specified conditions.

Prescribing, dispensing, or administering certain hormones for muscle-building or athletic performance.

Promoting or advertising a pharmacy on a prescription form unless the form also states that the prescription may be filled at the pharmacy of your choice.

Prescribing, dispensing, or administering drugs, including controlled substances, other than in the course of his or her professional practice.

Prescribing, dispensing, or administering a controlled substance to himself or herself.

Prescribing, dispensing, or administering laetrile.

Dispensing a controlled substance listed in Schedule II or Schedule III in violation of the requirements for dispensing practitioners in the Pharmacy Practice Act.

Promoting or advertising controlled substances.

Discussion

In Hustons (2010) brief, but impressive article (required reading this week), the author outlines several leadership competencies that EVERY nurse leader will need for 2020. That year is not too far in the future, is it?

1. Select one of the eight leadership competencies Huston described and relate it to your own leadership of nurses and nursing. This should promote a robust discussion as we come from different clinical and nonclinical perspectives.
2. Discuss how the BSN-prepared nurse can assist a nurse leader in the budgeting process by contributing data readily available to the staff nurse.

Question(s): Technological advances hold promises for improving quality of life, decreasing need for personal care assistance, and enhancing independence and ability to live safely. Choose one of the technologies mentioned in your textbook and discuss / explain it. Please, support your answer with a research study: Is there any research study of technological innovation related with your topic that promises advantages in the future of healthcare?

Grading Criteria: Student chose 1 technology for the book (25%) and discussed it (30%). Students support his / her answer with a research study (45%).

Discuss what is complicated grieving. Mention at least 3 clues for identifying complicated grief reaction.
