Week 9 Assignment: Special Populations

Certain populations have different treatment needs. Female offenders and offenders with mental health disorders are two such populations, although they are by no means the only two populations with special considerations. A growing body of research suggests that specific treatment programs have been effective for these two respective populations. Such programs take into account culture, age, gender, criminal offense, and other factors and bring together resources from many professional fields to provide a coordinated effort.

For this Assignment, you will assume the role of a criminal justice practitioner (law enforcement, courts, or corrections) who must make a recommendation about an evidence-based program for either female offenders or offenders with mental health disorders that is relevant to your field of interest. You will present your recommendation in the form of a presentation.

The Assignment

Create a PowerPoint presentation in which you address the following:

  • Part I: Provide historical context for the treatment of and outcomes for your selected population in the criminal justice system.
  • Part II: Describe the special needs of this population related to their treatment in your selected field of interest in the criminal justice system.
  • Part III: Identify the program you selected. Provide an overview of the program, including what services are provided and how the needs of the population are addressed.
  • Part IV: Provide empirical support that demonstrates the programs effectiveness. Cite at least two research studies that have tested the outcomes of the program

Select a country other than the United States of America and research at least two differences in the definitions of crimes and punishments for that country and the United States. Address the way law is shaped by values and traditions.

The seven principles of substantive criminal law allow authorities to define certain acts as being against the law. These seven principles are by no means adopted throughout the world; other countries base their laws on different principles. Laws typically reflect the values and traditions of a society. For example, criminal law may come from religious tenets. Under Islamic law, for example, society may punish certain kinds of defamation as criminal offenses. Differences in traditions, values, and social structures create variations in illegal vs. legal activity.

Select a country other than the United States of America and research at least two differences in the definitions of crimes and punishments for that country and the United States. Address the way law is shaped by values and traditions. Your paper must be at least 700-800 words in length, excluding the title and reference pages, and must adhere to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th edition) writing format.

If your paper does not comply with this format, you will lose points. You may want to visit Purdue OWL for assistance with formatting your paper in APA style. If you wish, commercial software program templates are available for purchase to assist in correct APA formatting. One example is PERRLA.

You must cite at least two scholarly references for your paper. Please be aware that websites such as Wikipedia are not scholarly sources. You are encouraged to access the Universitys online library resources to find scholarly journal articles, etc. The ProQuest and EBSCO databases may be helpful, but remember to limit your search to scholarly journal articles. You may also want to view the instructions for locating articles for Saint Leo classes. Please remember to review the information about locating and citing proper sources in your syllabus.

Glesne, C. (2016) Becoming qualitative researchers: An introduction (5th ed.). New York, NY: Pearson.

**Daniel**

Qualitative research is unlike quantitative research, in that qualitative research does not rely on measures, count, and numbers. The various strategies for determining the appropriate qualitative research method for a particular study is dependent upon the type of researcher that is conducting the study. The four types of qualitative research are our conceptual theorist, analytical scientists, particular humanist, a conceptual humanist.

James Rice and Marilyn Simon’s graph in the article Choosing your research method in a nutshell provides a simple identification of the various types of possible research. For conceptual theorists, the methods of research would be descriptive research, factor analysis, correlational research, repertory grid analysis, and the Q method. Analytical scientists will utilize trend analysis research, retrospective record review, regression-discontinuity design, because I experimental, experimental research, and design-based researchdecision analysis. Particular humanist researchers use some analogy, phenomenology, hermeneutic research, grounded theory, critical incident techniques, case study research, appreciative inquiry, and action research. Conceptual humanist also utilizes appreciative inquiry, casual-comparative research, content analysis, Delphi research, evaluation research, grounded theory, historical research, and phenomenology (Rice and Simon, n.d.).

Glesne (2016) provides an example of the process for determining methodology. Glesne gives examples of both an ethnographic research statement and an action research statement. These statements were both followed by research questions and finally, research methods. The methods included observations, document collection, literature, and interviews (Glesne, 2016). Glesne (2016) provided an example of an academic art museum study she participated in. The research question included how the works of art that had been distributed 50 years earlier had been utilized in what difference if any, the gifts had made. Many other museums were also polled resulting in an extensive qualitative research study (Glesne, 2016).

In choosing between a quantitative and qualitative research method for my dissertation, I am more apt to choose qualitative research methods. For my dissertation topic, I plan to determine if recruiting and retention with the law enforcement agency is directly correlated to the effectiveness of the agency head. From what I have learned thus far regarding qualitative research methods, my research will be geared towards that of a conceptual humanist researcher. Within the framework of the conceptual humanist researcher, I would focus on phenomenology, historical research, and grounded theory (Rice and Simon, n.d.). Because much of my dissertation will be geared toward surveys, historical data, and current trends within law enforcement, I need to ensure that I have an extensive sampling of data from across the country to properly validate my findings.

The Bible states in Proverbs 25:2, It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honor of kings is to search out a matter (King James Version). This verse reminds Christians that research is an honorable trait worthy of a king. The Bible further states in Proverbs 12:17, He that speaketh truth showeth forth righteousness: but a false witness deceit. God reminds us in this verse that the truth of the matter is considered righteous in the eyes of God. Whereas those who do not research and find out the truth bears false witness to his fellow man.
