Assignment 2

  1. Assignment 2: Organizational Climate at Wal-Mart
Due Week 4 and worth 160 points
The secret to Wal-Marts success has long been attributed to its strong culture. Wal-Mart employees are referred to as “Walmartians” which is a sign of a unique culture shared by them. This culture is responsible for a company of this magnitude to be able to sustain its entrepreneurial spirit decade after decade.
In early days, Wal-Mart achieved remarkable growth rates and was the first trillion-dollar company in the world. With amazing success came criticism. Wal-Mart once held the record for being sued the maximum number of times. Its practices and culture were held responsible for killing small local retailers. It was also criticized for gender-based discrimination, it’s overtime policies, and using sweatshop products.
Go to Walmarts Website and review the employment benefits it offers, located at .
Write a three to four (3-4) page paper in which you:
    1. Explain how viable employee relations practices have contributed to Wal-Marts success as an employer.
    2. Speculate on the contribution that employee benefits have in relation to the success of Wal-Marts employment practices.
    3. Predict the major effects that the organizational culture and the use of performance criteria could have on the establishment of a union.
    4. Speculate on why you believe Wal-Mart has not been effectively unionized over the years. Provide a rationale for your response.
    5. Use at least five (5) quality academic resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia does not qualify as an academic resource.

What has your most significant learning in the course been? Why? How will it help you in your career (personally or professionally)?

student response

Throughout this course, I learned a lot that can benefit me within the position that I hold right now. In my current position, I handle all the benefits  and billing with our carriers. I work in the casino industry so there are over 1,200 employees. This course allowed me to learn more about benefits as far as legal requirements and more. I was also able to learn a lot about the compensation system and evaluate my company’s compensation plan. I would say that the most beneficial would have to be learning about the different pay units such as pay grades, job codes, and more. I feel that this course will help me in my career in many different ways. Being able to apply the knowledge you learn, to your day to day tasks can help provide better understanding to some situations. I will actually be working on merit increases this coming year and this class has helped me to understand the background of merit increases. In my opinion, the knowledge I gained from this course will me to perform better within my position because now I have all the background information an be able to talk about it versus just completing my task. I also feel that I learned a lot from this class personally because I can use it to evaluate my own position and how my employer is treating me.

student response

The most significant topics that I learned more about in this class is pay structures. It was very interesting to learn about the different pay structures and when as well as how they should be implemented. One system that I enjoyed learning about and thought was very useful was the internal consistent compensation system. This system is very important to learn about because it defines the relative value of each job as well as provide job descriptions among all jobs within an organization. I believe as I move forward into a career of Human Resource Management, it will be important to advise and create pay structures. Also, learning more about the difference between legal and discretionary pay structures was also very useful. It is important to invest in employees. Providing benefits that will keep employees engaged and motivated to perform at a higher level will result in high productivity among the organization. There were many useful tools that I learned in this class and was able to apply to our signature assignment. All of the topics we discussed will be useful in the future when pursing a job in the field.
