Early Christian and Byzantine

The architecture, furniture and design elements of Early Christianity and Byzantine were appropriated from Roman and other local examples. One important design and architectural feature consistently used throughout the time period are mosaics.

Find an example of a mosaic created during the Early Christian and/or Byzantine period and upload/embed a jpeg image of your choice.

Please use: Theodora and Attendants, Mosaic, San Vitale, Ravenna, Italy, circa 547 CE.

Create a three-paragraph minimum essay discussing the stylistic characteristics of your choice.

Provide the following:

Name/title
Artist/designer (if known)
Date
Background information on the building in which it is located
Describe the stylistic elements of the motif – what does it look like?
What is the iconography used?
What previous examples influenced your choice – where have we seen a similar motif?
How does this reflect the geography of the building, the culture and the greater time period?
Dont forget to include your research sources.

Final – Italian Renaissance

I’ve attached the format for reference
___________________________________________

For the final project, for the selected design movement (Italian Renaissance); describe and analyze in three elements:

– Design Board (20 images)
– Essay (5 paragraph minimum)
– Research Bibliography (for both the design board images and the essay, in MLA style) with a minimum of 5 credible sources

For the Design Board

Your design board will consist of the following:

– 20 images that best represent your chosen movement; the images will be arranged with five images in a row and four images in a column
– The images will consist of architectural and design elements, furniture items, decorative objects, textiles, etc., that represent your chosen movement
– Your images may be from a multitude of sources (local/national paper, magazines, snapshots, found objects, photographs, etc.), but need to be scanned or photographed and embedded as digital images in your submitted file

For the Essay

Your essay will address the following:

– A stylistic description of your chosen movement and a brief discussion of why you selected this movement
– A brief biography of any referenced designer(s)
– A description of each item included in your mood board, using relevant terminology/ vocabulary words and analysis of their stylistic characteristics. Why do these examples best represent the period and movement?
– An analysis of the greater socioeconomic and political circumstances that influenced the growth and development of the movement. How did these factors inform the style of the movement?

Your essay will be a minimum of five paragraphs written using the introduction, body/argument, conclusion, and bibliography format

Science and Technology

For your final essay, I want you to write a historically-based, persuasive paper on the topic: “What should American science and technology policy look like in the 21st century?”

For this paper I would like you to make reference to topics, cultures, and “modes of science and technology” (e.g. “Babylonian,” “Hellenic,” etc.) from the entire course. This is a “comprehensive final” in that respect. You do not of course have to use everything in the course. But don’t base the paper on only the 1920th centuries, is what I am saying. I expect you to make references to cultures other than Western Europe and the United States (along with Western Europe and the United States).

Questions you might consider:

What kind of science and technology do we need in the 21st century?
What kind of social context would produce that kind of science and technology?
Are there examples of this in the past, both recent and far?
Are there examples from the past of social contexts that would not produce that kind of science and technology? (You can show knowledge by demonstration of the opposite e.g., “as this example illustrates, we could go the wrong way if we aren’t careful”)
The above are just guiding ideas, and do not need to be explicitly addressed in your essay if you want to go another way with it. I am happy to read a creative argument! Just make sure it addresses the main goal of this exam (showcasing knowledge).

REMEMBER: this is a historical essay! Yes, it is talking about the future. We can do that with history. But base it primarily in a discussion of the past. This is not meant to be a pure-opinion op-ed. The goal is for me to see that you have learned enough about this history that you can think about it synthetically not just as a recollection of facts, but as an active form of knowledge that you can apply to modern-day questions.

Global Societal Problem, Argument and Solution

Prepare: Prior to beginning work on this assignment, please review this Sample Final Paper GEN499 for additional guidance on the expectations of this assignment.

The topic of your essay needs to be a global societal problem from the following list:

Climate change
Pollution
Religious conflict and violence
Rise of artificial intelligence
Lack of education
Unemployment and lack of economic opportunity
Government accountability and corruption
Food and water security
International drug trafficking
Poverty and income inequality
Reflect: Based on the topic that you have chosen, you will need to use critical thinking skills to thoroughly understand how this topic can be a global societal problem and determine some logical solutions to the problem.

Write: This Final Paper, an argumentative essay, will present research relating the critical thinker to the modern, globalized world. In this assignment, you need to address the items below in separate sections with new headings for each.

In your paper,

Identify the global societal problem within the introductory paragraph.
Conclude with a thesis statement that states your proposed solutions to the problem. (For guidance on how to construct a good introduction paragraph, please review the Introductions & Conclusions (Links to an external site.) from the Ashford Writing Center (Links to an external site.).)
Describe background information on how that problem developed or came into existence.
Show why this is a societal problem.
Provide perspectives from multiple disciplines or populations so that you fully represent what different parts of society have to say about this issue.
Construct an argument supporting your proposed solutions, considering multiple disciplines or populations so that your solution shows that multiple parts of society will benefit from this solution.
Provide evidence from multiple scholarly sources as evidence that your proposed solution is viable.
Interpret statistical data from at least three peer-reviewed scholarly sources within your argument.
Discuss the validity, reliability, and any biases.
Identify the strengths and weaknesses of these sources, pointing out limitations of current research and attempting to indicate areas for future research. (You may even use visual representations such as graphs or charts to explain statistics from sources.)
Evaluate the ethical outcomes that result from your solution.
Provide at least one positive ethical outcome as well as at least one negative ethical outcome that could result from your solution.
Explain at least two ethical issues related to each of those outcomes. (It is important to consider all of society.)
Develop a conclusion for the last paragraphs of the essay, starting with rephrasing your thesis statement and then presenting the major points of the topic and how they support your argument. (For guidance on how to write a good conclusion paragraph, please review the Introductions & Conclusions (Links to an external site.) from the Ashford Writing Center (Links to an external site.).)

Good Critical Thinking Tips:

Your paper should include academic sources that explain multiple sides of the issue.
Your interpretations of the evidence should be objective and state the conclusions and theses presented in the evidence clearly and fairly.
Your paper should place the various forms of evidence in relation to one another and demonstrate why one form or perspective is stronger than the other positions that one could take on the issue.
Your paper should point out the limitations of current evidence and attempt to indicate areas for future research.

History

You are asked to write a 5-6 page (double-space) research paper on a topic related to this class. A list of topics will be provided but you must have your choice of topic approved by the professor.  You will submit your proposal for topic here on Blackboard in Week 10, no later than 11:59 pm on Sunday, November 1.

The paper will include

a map or image or chart
and all sources will be footnoted.
You can use any scholarly system of footnoting as long as it is consistent throughout the paper. (See suggestions below.)

The intent of the paper is to reference and expand on the material studied in the class, and to explore further a topic of particular interest to you.

You may also choose to include a summary paragraph that relates the historical material to current events today.

The research paper is worth 100 points, like an exam, and counts as 30% of the final semester grade.

HINTS FOR A BETTER PAPER

This paper is 5-6, double-space paper.  Use Times Roman font in 12-pt. size.

Your paper must show that you have done research beyond what we learned in class.  Try to find an unusual angle or perspective (your thesis). Formulate your own opinion and back it up with sources. Dont forget to look for primary sources, such as letters, diaries, speeches, etc.

ALL information should be referenced, not just quotations.

.

You can use any style or format that you choose, as long as it is consistent throughout the paper.

However, here are some helpful hints:

mill workers

Students will write a four-page review on Timothy Coogans article Mill Workers and their World: Adams Massachusetts.  The review should focus on the lives of the mill workers and their relationship to the mill owners.  I would suggest focusing on four or five points that Coogan talks about in the article and go into depth on those points.

Terrorism

Why do people join terrorist groups? Are these people different from the rest of us in some important, identifiable way? If so, can we identify the roots of these differences and explain them using a psychological theory? Your investigation of this topic is not meant to be expansive or all- inclusive. Finding and investigating a part of the puzzle can still be a valuable contribution to our understanding. You should choose one or more individual cases and present your investigation of the psychological forces that motivated these specific persons to join a terrorist group and/or commit terrorist acts. Alternatively, you may wish to focus on a particular terrorist group and the members attracted to it. Please take seriously the need to scale this topic to a narrow investigation trying to explain all of the sources of the problem will overwhelm your resources and make the resulting paper much too shallow as it tries to explain everything. There is no explanation for all terrorism. Choose a small, well-delineated portion of the problem and a specific psychological theory that you believe helps us understand it.

Begin by reading and watching some of the background resources provided below to familiarize yourself with the scope of the problem and some explanations that have been offered by others. Then, begin the process of reducing your topic to a manageable size. Within this narrowed scope of your investigation, identify a particular theory that you think may help explain the case(s) under study. As you investigate whether or not the theory identified is an adequate explanation for the problem, present your logical conclusions with their associated evidence.

For example, if you assert that social or group forces are more powerful as explanations, you may hypothesize that Rational Choice Theory, Mertons strain theory, or some other theory can provide a useful framework for understanding terrorist group membership and acts. Conversely, you may determine the focus is better placed on individual forces, you may explain it using psychological concepts like frustration-aggression, psychopathy, narcissistic Injury, schizophrenia, or other mental illness. Do not limit your scope to these examples. They are just that; examples. You may certainly find other plausible explanations.

In this section of the paper, you will explain the problem identified and identify a psychological or sociological theory that purports to explain some aspect of the problem. This section should contain reference citations as needed to authors whose theories or statements of the problem have informed your understanding. You should state the question clearly, explain the theory you think helps explain the answer, and define the terms as they will be used in your paper. (For example, what is a terrorist group?)
