Discussion

For the most part, our memories serve us well, allowing us to make sense of our past and present world. In fact, and according to Loftus (2003), we are the sum of our memories; what we have thought, what we have been told, and what we believe. Not only are we shaped by our memories, but our memories are shaped by who we are. Loftus argues that we “seem to reinvent our memories, and in doing so, we become the person of our own imagination” (p. 872).

Loftus argues that memories are malleable and subject to distortion and suggestion. She makes the following observations about eyewitness accounts of crimes:

Misinformation can influence people’s memories when they are in a suggestive fashion or when they talk to other people who give their version of events. Misinformation can sway people when they see biased media coverage about some event that they may have experienced themselves. This phenomenon would ultimately be called the misinformation effect (p. 868).

After completing the unit readings on memory processes, how would you explain the misinformation effect? Specifically discuss how the misinformation effect may be important to your professional or academic life. Refer to and integrate ideas presented in your text and any supplemental readings. Cite outside resources if necessary to make your point.

Discussion 1: Test Misuse

Test ethics cover both the creation and use of tests. For this Discussion, you concentrate on the implications of test misuse. These can relate to test use with diverse groups, licensure issues, adverse impact, or test security, to name a few.

Some important basic ethical principles regarding testing are as follows:

  • The construction of tests needs to be done using appropriate psychometric procedures so that the test will provide valid measurement.
  • When tests are used, they need to be properly selected. The test should be valid for the purpose used and should not be outdated. The selection should take into account the purpose of the testing and should also take into account the examinees language, culture, and disabilities.
  • The test needs to be administered according to proper protocol in order to maintain standardization.
  • The test needs to be interpreted and reported fairly, and the report needs to be stored properly. The responsible psychology professional should prevent misinterpretation and should prevent reporting that results in incorrect decisions or that causes the client unnecessary emotional harm. He or she should also protect the clients confidentiality.
  • Test givers must maintain the security of test materials. Many tests, such as the Wechsler intelligence tests or the MMPI, have been developed over a period of decades. Public familiarity with these tests would destroy their usefulness. Test publishers generally have standards controlling who can buy and use their tests.
  • A test has an adverse impact when it results in substantially different employment decisions (e.g., hiring, promotion, termination) for one group versus another group. This adverse impact is unlawful if there is no justification for it. For instance, some jobs might have tests of physical strength that result in fewer women being hired. The employer would need to demonstrate that physical strength is a legitimate job requirement.

To prepare for this Discussion, think of potential effects of tests not being administered, stored, or interpreted according to ethical principles. Consider the effects on both the individuals being tested and, potentially, the population at large.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 3 two potential effects of test misuse on individuals being tested and on the population at large. Support your answer with references to the APA Code of Ethics and other relevant standards.

Discussion: The Future Of Leadership

As a scholar-practitioner, it is important to stay abreast of current leadership research and practice. In doing so, you have the opportunity to learn about trends in the field that may benefit you, as a leader, or your client. Like any other field, some trends will be fleeting, and some will persist.

For this Discussion, you will review recent volumes of leadership journals and visit leadership-specific websites to identify trends that you think will persist. You also will consider how such trends will change the practice of leadership.

To Prepare:

  • Review the most recent volumes in the journals from the Learning Resources. Also, peruse the websites listed in the Learning Resources.
  • Consider recurring themes related to leadership in the journals and on the websites. Based on the themes, identify one current leadership trend that you think will still be relevant in the future.
  • Think about how the trend will change the future practice of leadership and the knowledge, skills, and abilities leaders would need to possess if the trend continues in the future.

By Day 3

Describe one current leadership trend you think will still be relevant in the future, and explain why. Then provide two examples of how the trend might change the future practice of leadership. Be specific. Finally, describe knowledge, skills, and abilities that leaders would need to possess if the trend continues in the future.

By Day 5
