After watching Cheating Gene video, I learnt that vasopressin is important to make strong bonding between partners. But the gene 334 which is mainly present in men can cause them to cheat their partners. From Helen Fishers research, I learnt that how biology is connected to the behavior of people in love. I also learnt how our brain and hormones are associated with our capability of love and attachment. Also, I learnt the impact of women on business, society, relationship, and love.

I found both researches very informative. I was surprise to know that infidelity is caused by hormonal changes. How increase or decrease level of hormones such as dopamine, serotonin, and vasopressin affect the relationship. I agree with these researches, but I also believe that only these factors are not responsible for infidelity. I think that infidelity is caused by lack of mutual respect and trust between the partners. Also, it is caused by lack of closeness between couples where they can openly share personal feelings, expectations, care, and understanding. Blaming only the gene as cause of infidelity does not make sense.

One of my friends experienced divorce due to infidelity. In their case, wife was unfaithful because she was interested in someone else. Her husband was not making enough money, but he loved her so much. Their relationship problems grew day by day ending up with divorce.

I agree that brain and gene play an important role in human motivation and relationships, but in my opinion brain and gene alone do not cause behavior, it is also influenced by the environment.

It would make sense that people, not just women, that have higher hormone levels would be more likely to cheat on their significant other.  But thats not the only thing that can cause a person to be unfaithful. Other reasons include but are not limited to: not receiving enough pleasure from your SO, not maintaining that emotional connection, fighting with your SO a lot, etc.  People tend to seek out another persons attention when their SO is ignoring them or if they just got in a big argument. This has the chance of leading to people being unfaithful. I think all people have the chance to cheat and that they choose to do so of their own free will.

Hormone levels do have an effect on our brain but maybe not in the sense that the articles are mentioning.  People go to the doctor to find out if theyre feeling depressed or if theyre having mood swings because of a chemical imbalance or another reason.  I have personally done this and it ended up not being a chemical imbalance. I would also not trust the Today Show over the articles because news shows tend to not have the correct information.  This leads to spreading misinformation which can cause a lot of problems down the road. I also tend to trust articles more because of the sources and I can more easily check the information to see if its correct or not.

These videos and articles were very interesting. Vasopressin was not something I had heard of before. Neither was Gene 334.  From this content I have learned that there may be biological factors that make men and women susceptible to cheating or being less likely to commit to one partner. The first video focused on men who cheat and proposed that it might have something to do with the way that gene334 interacted with vasopressin in males. However, the two written articles focused on attractive women with high hormone levels that made them more prone to being unfaithful. The first video also suggested that environment can override the genetic predisposition. I do not recall that being mentioned in the written articles concerning the women.

The TED Talk with Helen Fisher was the more informative and reliable discussion out of all the material listed in my opinion. The study of romantic love and the processes that are involved has been her main focus of study for 30 years. She approaches the topic from all angles and even refers to patterns that existed in ancient times. She has done studies, supplies statistical data and has performed MRIs. She does not consider romantic love to be an emotion. It is the result of three different brain systems. Sometimes all three of the brain systems are connected and focused on one individual, and sometimes each system can be applied separately. She says that is why some are able to be in love with more than one person. That could lead to infidelity or lack of commitment to one person.

The first video did have statistics and studies to back up their statements. I do believe that all humans can be born susceptible to certain patterns of behavior, but environment and other factors can lead to different outcomes. Alcoholism runs through each side of my family. My father is on his fourth marriage and my mother is on her fifth marriage. There very well may be a gene that can be identified that contributes to these two issues. I would be likely to inherit those same genes from both of my parents. However, I only drink alcohol twice a year and I have been married for 19 years. I feel that I would not only be genetically predisposed to alcoholism and infidelity, but my environment would have encouraged it or at least made it acceptable. I strongly believe that people have the power to choose what is acceptable and what is not acceptable. If someone is happy to cheat on their partner, it is their conscious choice to do so. Monogamy may not be everyones cup of tea.

Ultimately, I think infidelity is a sign that you may not truly love your significant other. Perhaps all three of your brain systems are not focused on one person. If that is the case, that is ok. You dont have to love someone just because they love you. I feel that truly loving someone means that you consider their wellbeing a high priority. You would not intentionally do anything that would cause them physical or emotional pain. I dont think that you can cheat on someone that you love. Occasionally, people will cheat because they know it will end a relationship that they no longer want to be a part of. Regardless of the specific reason, I feel infidelity is something people do because they are not happy or they think cheating will make them happier.

Biology may have a role in how we find partners or what we look for in a mate in order to reproduce. I think the specific characteristics that we look for are deeply ingrained in humans and were originally meant for optimizing reproduction. Our brains have many intricacies and we have definitely evolved as a species. However, basic needs and the motivation to acquire them surely can be studied and evaluated by studying the brain.

ADHD is a sort of mental condition that I believe now-a-days runs very common in children to the point where almost every hyper child is tested for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or something of the like from a very young age. Personally, I believe that being under medication should be a choice to the individual themselves, unless their unmedicated behavior can directly and harmfully affect other people. In Alex’s case, it appears that his self-esteem suffered immensely, and his lack of attention to not only himself and his health but a lack of interest and ability to focus in school seemed to directly affect this as well. This lead to depression and very low self-esteem and his parents believed that ADHD medication would benefit him the most. It seemed to be effective, as it helped Alex get better not only mentally but also in school.

As for Robin, he was diagnosed very young and was on medication since the 4th grade, despite his vocalization that he did not like the drugs, his parents changed the medication and had him on it still. Robin began to become unhappy and unmotivated to the point where his parents hospitalized him. It affected him so much that his teachers didn’t know how to react around him. However, eventually, Robin refused to take his medication despite his mother’s best efforts.

I will only further reiterate my earlier opinion on the subject– I believe that medication should always be up to the person taking it, and that when it comes to medicating your children, I believe that proper communication between parent and child should be done to ensure that this is in fact in the child’s best benefit.

I believe a lot of problems start to steam at a very young age for most people. Alex issues come from in my eyes from not getting the proper attention he needed. He also lacked confidence and that can really tear someone down. They could get torn down from it, but from proper care he was getting from the people and medication I think could help the most and he needed that. It takes a long time for someone to start loving there self after not thinking they are enough to even live and that is reasonable. How ever long it takes you to get back on track should not matter.

Robins situation you cannot just think what worked for one chid could work for the next. You have to see if that child has even talked to someone about how he feels. Most of the time they just have a lot going on and just need to talk to someone about how they can get through. There home life may not be like the person before him. That also effects a person and the type of medication that he/she is on. You have more stress or anything slightly different than the other person that is on the same medication it can be thrown off. He also did not have the same support as Alex. If he actually talked to someone that specialized in disorders in mood swings and they felt like they could not help then think of other opinion, but medication should not be your first opinion. Most medication throws off everything else in the body, it do not just fix that one problem and that is it. It makes everything off balance and now you have new problems because you messed with one thing that could have went without medicine.

Discussion Topic

ADHD is a controversial topic, to say the least. When a child is presented with symptoms such as Alex, I would thoroughly research other mood disorders, as well as personality disorders. Since he was a victim of being bullied, I believe his self-worth declined. Which in return can harm a child’s development. If that child also has other factors, such as being overweight, sensitive, and even hyper-vigilant. It could result in a powerful trio of self esteem issues. I strongly believe medication was his most impactful option. His wellbeing improved significantly after taking medication. Though, I also believe the attention and care he received through his parents, teachers, therapists, and psychiatrist also helped his self worth.

Robin was heavily medicated in the 6th grade. SSRI’s on top of stimulants is a very potent combination for an eleven or twelve year old. Resulting in his frequent up and down mood swings, as noticed by his teachers. Robin didn’t seem to have the same kind or amount of sympathy as Alex received. Robin may of had a different type of reaction to his behavior from his parents, teachers, and doctors. Which may of resulted in his lack of motivation to better himself. Before medicating a child I think we should research quite a bit. Almost as a social worker would. I think this could also give an insight on how the parents react to the child’s behavior. Another question before meditating would be, Has the child seen a therapist? Is the child fed nutritionally balanced foods? Is the child malnourished with unhealthy drinks and snacks? Or even does the child have a stable relationship with food?

A potential solution for robin would have been to start with therapy, particularly for mood disorders. Then a possibility of adding medications after studying how he reacts to therapy. Never a combination of SSRI’s and stimulants. Especially at such a young age.

According to Dr. Castillanos’ research, the brain changes and rewires itself. He believes ADHD children have a different functioning cerebellum than other children, resulting in the disorder. The cerebellum is considered the mini brain, or co-processor.

The attempt to force Robin to take Ritalin was inhumane. Robin seemed the least violent out of all the children, also the one with the least amount of control over his own treatments. I wonder if his parents divorce branched off of the possible disagreement on his mother’s decision to force the Ritalin.

It is hard to compare the two due to the lack of information on Robin. Though, from what I can tell is that he didn’t have such a great support system. His mother treated him mostly as a burden/problem, and even abandoned him because of it. His behavior may have partially been due to a toxic parent. Even though Alex was the more aggressive of the two, he had a great support system, when he needed it most. Alex’ parents took him to a water park the first day on his new medicine. Which just goes to show how much his parents strived for his wellbeing. Seeing how Alex’ symptoms worsened as he took anti-depressants just goes to show how sensitive the brain is. Robin was given quite a bit more medication on top of anti-depressants, which resulted in being hospitalized.

Investigate Cultural Diversity In Forensic

you will choose a forensic assessment measure to investigate. Your  measure may be a risk assessment, structured clinical interview,  personality test, trauma inventory, among others.

After reviewing and selecting a forensic measure, you will then  design an advertisement for the measure, specifically marketing its use  with diverse populations. Your advertisement should:

  1. Discuss the importance of cultural competence in forensic assessment.
  2. Explore the benefits of using a measure that is culturally competent.
  3. Identify how the measure you selected is culturally competent and why it should be used, as opposed to another measure.
  4. Be creative! This does not have to be a paper, but rather can be a flier or handout.

Support your advertisement with at least two references from peer-reviewed journals.

Length: 1-2 pages

Your advertisement should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the  ideas and concepts presented in the course by providing new thoughts  and insights relating directly to this topic.

Case 2

Assignment 2: Case Study #2

Overview

As you continue to practice the psychological concepts youre learning in this course, youre honing the problem solving and self and social awareness skills that will help you navigate social situations in your life and career. Youre discovering how to apply these skills to understand the behaviors of others, improve your relationships, and make informed decisions based on reliable information.

And no matter what kind of situation you encounter at school, home, or work, youre learning how to recognize and manage your emotions so they dont get the best of you!

Now, its time to practice the skills and concepts to help your friend Gloria navigate a difficult workplace situation.

Case Study and Questions

Gloria and Lakeisha are co-workers who are assigned to work on a project together. Lakeisha is very organized and wants them to do really well on this project. To help them get started, Lakeisha took some initiative and prepared a list of to-do items along with due dates. She even color-coded the list to indicate which partner will do each item and sends an email to Gloria with the to-do list. Lakeisha wants her partner to know that shes serious about their success.

Gloria is happy her teammate has shown initiative but is surprised by Lakeishas to-do list and feels a bit uncomfortable because she feels like Lakeisha is micromanaging her. Gloria wants to do her part on the project but is feeling anxious because she doesnt know where she fits in, and it is making her worried about working on this project. She wonders how she can succeed on this project if Lakeisha is already the leader. When working for a previous employer, Gloria felt anxious about her ability to successfully complete a project and attempted to communicate her feelings with a co-worker; however, her co-worker didnt seem to understand Glorias concerns and said that she should just ignore her feelings and get the work done.

As Gloria ponders having a conversation with Lakeisha, she starts to feel overwhelmed and thinks it might just be easier to be removed from the project. Using your problem solving and self and social awareness skills and what you have learned about personality traits and emotions, answer the questions below to help Gloria calm her anxiety and find a solution to her problem:

1. From Chapter 3 in the webtext, what did you learn about the big 5 personality traits?

2. Consider Gloria and Lakeishas different approaches to the project. On which one of the Big 5 personality traits do they most differ? How do they differ?

3. Chapter 6 in the webtext focused on emotions. Using what you learned, give advice to Gloria on how she can identify and regulate her own emotions so that she can stick with this project, and be successful.

4. If you were in this situation, how confident are you that you could successfully resolve a workplace conflict like the one that Gloria faced? What past experiences or knowledge influence your answer

Instructions

Use the to record your responses. For each question, you should write a paragraph-length response (5-7 sentences) to receive credit for this assignment. You may use your Soomo webtext as a resource. Once you have completed your work, save the file and upload it to the assignment submission area.
