Essay Question #7:  What are any four common categories of risk? What is an element of each category?

The assignment is to answer the question provided above in essay form. This is to be in narrative form. Bullet points should not to be used. The paper should be at least 1.5 – 2 pages in length, Times New Roman 12-pt font, double-spaced, 1 inch margins and utilizing at least one outside scholarly or professional source related to project management. This does not mean blogs or websites. This source should be a published article in a scholarly journal (Journal of Project Management)  or a professional journal (such as PMI’s Project Management Journal). This source should provide substance and not just be mentioned briefly to fulfill this criteria. The journal article should not replace or provide information already in the textbook. It should be used to provide greater detail through examples, research, case studies, etc.

The textbook should also be utilized extensively to answer the question based upon the weekly reading. Do not use quotes. Do not insert excess line spacing. APA formatting and citiation should be used.

 

Reflect on the assigned readings for the week.

1) Identify what you thought was the one most important concept(s), method(s), and/or specific item that you felt was worthy of your understanding from the Key Terms on page 262. 

2) Discuss in detail what the term means, how it is used and other pertinent information about the selected term including a specific example, application or case study from your own experience. Be specific; not vague or general.

3) Provide a detailed discussion of why you thought this selection is important and how it relates overall to risk management.

Your initial post should be based upon the assigned reading for the week, so the textbook should be a source listed in your reference section and cited within the body of the text. Other sources are not required but feel free to use them if they aid in your discussion.

Your initial post should be at least 450+ words and in APA format (including Times New Roman with font size 12 and double spaced). Post the actual body of your paper in the discussion thread then attach a Word version of the paper for APA review. Do not use lists or bullet points. This will result in substantial loss of points in the Substance section and the Requirements section.

Your posts must be substantive and demonstrate insight gained from the course material. A peer response such as I agree with her, or I liked what he said about that is not considered substantive and will not be counted for course credit. Study Glen and McManus’ (2014) chapter on Motivation.  Pick two of the suggested ways for creating a motivationally creative environment.  In the first paragraph, summarize each motivator, add your insight, and give an example of how the motivator might be effective.  You can make up the example or share a real life story to illustrate.

In the second paragraph describe ways that we can retain our technology workers.  Note the motivational value of self-awareness tools like the Clifton StrengthsFinder in engaging employees.  Scan the Deloitte (current and previous years) study on millennial motivators.  Choose thoughts from Deloitte AND other articles found in your own research to find ways that millennial geeks can be motivated to stay engaged and retained.

Be sure to cite and reference Glen and McManus (2014), Deloitte (current or previous years), and your own research in your post.

Documenting ObservationsObserving work and analyzing what you see into data can be difficult. For this exercise, you will observe via online video.

Search the internet for Dirty Jobs. This is a television show. The host, Mike, experiences the end-to-end process of several kinds of dirty jobs during each show, but does not necessarily do them in order from beginning to end.

Identify a show with two segments to review.

For each of the two segments in that show, identify the items below. To do this you may wish to use a spreadsheet or set up a table so that your data makes sense.          

The jobs (roles/tasks)

The flow of work from one role/task to the next (create a process flow)

The input and outputs of each role/task

The characteristic differences between a novice (Mike) doing this work and an expert doing the work

The impact of mistakes on the job

The reasons that people do this dirty work every day what motivates them?Barriers to accomplishing the task.

Then analyze Mikes interview techniques.          

How did he gain acceptance with his experts? What did he do or say to help get them on his side?

Identify a set of stock questions that he uses repeatedly with small variations?

How does his technique differ from the techniques recommended in your text?

You are a spray applicator for a local co-op. Its been a wet Spring, work is backed up and farmer-clients are threatening to take their business somewhere else. One of the most vocal clients farms ground around an elementary school.  On the first good day in weeks, the client calls the branch manager and demands that his fields be sprayed that morning. The branch manager tells you to load up and go spray. When you get there, the playground is full of children and the wind is blowing at 30 mph. You call the branch manager to tell him the conditions are not suitable to spray. He responds that he doesn’t have any choice: it has to be sprayed.
